How do barcodes work?

Most barcodes are a machine readable pattern of wide and narrow bars that represent a numeric or alphanumeric value, encoded into that pattern by a set of mathematical formulas defined by global industry standards. A barcode scanner can read and decode that pattern back into the original text.
